Cut the carrot and zucchini into thin matchsticks about 5cm long. If too thick they won't mix well with the rice, so cut as thin as possible.
Boil the soybean sprouts in 500ml water with a pinch of salt, lid on, for 3 minutes. Never open the lid midway or it will smell fishy. Drain and rinse in cold water.
Blanch the spinach in the same boiling water for just 30 seconds, rinse in cold water, squeeze out the water firmly, and season with 1 tsp sesame oil and a pinch of salt.
Heat a pan over medium, add 1 tsp oil, and stir-fry the carrot for 2 minutes with a pinch of salt. Remove once slightly softened.
In the same pan, stir-fry the zucchini over medium for 2 minutes. Remove as soon as it turns slightly translucent, before it releases water — overcooking makes it mushy.
Season the soybean sprouts with 1 tsp sesame oil and a pinch of salt. Now you have four vegetable side preparations ready.
Lower the heat to medium-low, add a little oil, and fry the eggs. Turn off the heat once the whites are set but the yolk is still runny (about 2 minutes).
Heat the Ottogi Rice or Hetbahn in the microwave for 2 minutes at 700W. Peel the film slightly along the guide line to let steam escape.
Place the hot rice in a wide bowl and arrange the vegetables in a circle by color on top of the rice. Set the fried egg in the center.
Add 1 tbsp gochujang and 1 tsp sesame oil. If you can't handle spice, reduce the gochujang to 1/2 tbsp.
Using a spoon, mix the rice, vegetables, and gochujang thoroughly from bottom to top. Break the yolk and mix it in for extra richness.
I'm worried it'll be too spicy. Can I adjust the heat?
Just adjust the gochujang amount. Mild: 1/2 tbsp, medium: 1 tbsp, spicy: 1.5 tbsp. Adding a bit more sesame oil softens the heat.
How many servings is this?
This meal kit makes about 2 servings. It includes 2 instant rice packs (Ottogi Rice + Hetbahn).
How do I store the gochujang?
After opening, seal the lid tightly and refrigerate. Keep the surface from drying out and it lasts several months.
Can I swap in different vegetables?
Absolutely. Mushrooms, cucumber, bell pepper, lettuce — any vegetable in your fridge works. Bibimbap is a dish where you freely add whatever veggies you like.
What cooking tools do I need?
Just one frying pan, one pot, a microwave, and a wide bowl. No special equipment required.
Can beginners or kids make it?
Yes — it only involves stir-frying and blanching vegetables, so beginners find it easy. For kids, use just a little gochujang or replace it with soy sauce and sesame oil for a milder taste.
