A familiar comparison for European palates: as a caffeine-free barley-based drink, Boricha belongs to a similar category as Italian caffè d'orzo — but the Korean style steeps whole grains directly, resulting in a cleaner, lighter flavour.

How to Enjoy Korean-Style · Recetas Coreanas

The most popular ways to enjoy Boricha in Korean households — experience this everyday drink exactly as it is served in Korea.

Hot Boricha
따뜻한 보리차
The most everyday way to drink Boricha in Korea. Add a handful of barley (approx. 15g) to 1 litre of water and simmer for 5–10 minutes, then drink warm. Served alongside meals as the standard table drink in Korean homes — the ideal warm cup when you want something comforting without the caffeine of coffee or black tea.
Iced Boricha
시원한 보리차
Korea's go-to thirst-quencher in summer. Brew the Boricha, let it cool, then keep it chilled in the fridge. In Korean households it always occupies a spot in the refrigerator in place of a water bottle — the most popular way to enjoy it after exercise or on a hot day.
With Korean Meals
한식 식사 음료
The perfect beverage pairing for Korean dishes such as Bulgogi, Bibimbap, or Kimchi Jjigae (kimchi stew). Its gentle, clean finish cuts through bold, spicy seasonings and refreshes the palate between bites. In Korean restaurants, Boricha is the standard drink served in place of water.
After BBQ
삼겹살·구이 후
A warm cup of Boricha after Korean BBQ — Samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) or Galbi (short ribs) — is a classic Korean post-meal ritual that cleanses the palate after rich, fatty food. A non-alcoholic Korean pairing to enjoy in place of wine.
Boricha Rice (Sungnyung-style)
보리차 말이 / 숭늉식
A traditional Korean home-style dish: pour warm Boricha over leftover cooked rice and eat it as a light, soothing meal. Similar in spirit to Sungnyung (scorched-rice tea), a beloved old Korean custom — gentle on the stomach and wonderfully comforting.
Evening Cup
잠들기 전 한 잔
Completely caffeine-free, Boricha can be enjoyed in the evening or right before bed without any concern. In Korean households it is common to wind down the day with a warm cup of Boricha — the calm, nutty grain aroma creates a relaxing atmosphere to close out the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Boricha and how is it different from coffee or black tea?

Boricha is a traditional Korean grain beverage made by steeping roasted whole barley grains in hot or cold water. Unlike green tea or black tea, which use tea leaves, Boricha contains absolutely no caffeine and is far less stimulating than coffee. The flavour is characterised by the nutty, mellow quality of roasted grain — similar in category to European barley water or Italian orzo (roasted barley drink). In Korea it is an everyday drink enjoyed in place of water during meals or served chilled as a cold brew in summer. Sempio Sunjak uses organic whole grain barley for a deeper, richer roasted flavour.

Is this product suitable for vegans and vegetarians?

Yes, Sempio Sunjak Organic Whole Grain Barley Tea is 100% suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. The ingredient list consists solely of organic barley — no animal-derived ingredients, dairy, eggs, honey or any other animal products are included. Those following a fully plant-based diet can enjoy this product with complete confidence.

Can this product be consumed by people with a gluten allergy or coeliac disease?

No, this product is not suitable for people with a gluten allergy or coeliac disease. The main ingredient, barley (BARLEY), is classified as a gluten-containing cereal under the EU food labelling regulation (EU 1169/2011, Annex II) — one of the 14 mandatory declared allergens. This product is not gluten-free. Anyone sensitive to gluten should avoid consuming it.

Is this product certified organic? Where does it come from?

Sempio Sunjak Barley Tea is labelled as using organic barley. For organic claims on the EU market, certification under EU organic regulation (EU 2018/848) or an equivalent agreement is required; please refer to the product packaging and the dotasia.eu product page to verify the applicable certification. The barley ingredient originates from China (Greater Khingan Range region), while the manufacturer and brand — Sempio — is Korean. Please note that while the brand is Korean, the raw barley ingredient itself is of Chinese origin.

How do you brew or steep Boricha? Can it be enjoyed both hot and cold?

Boricha can be enjoyed both hot and cold. ① Hot Boricha: Bring 1 litre of water to the boil, add 20–30g of barley tea and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes. Strain out the grains and serve immediately. ② Cold Brew Boricha: Add 20–30g of barley tea to 1 litre of cold water and leave to steep in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours, then strain. Cold brewing brings out the smooth, nutty character of the barley even more gently. Brewed Boricha should be consumed within 2–3 days when kept refrigerated.
