Korean-Style Uses · Recetas Coreanas

Six authentic Korean dishes enjoyed with Sempio Crispy Frying Mix in Korean households — simply mix with cold water and experience the signature Korean crunch at home.

Saeu-twigim
새우튀김
Korean-style crispy fried shrimp. Lightly mix the frying mix with cold water, coat the shrimp in the batter, and deep-fry at 170°C until golden and crispy. A popular dish in Korean households for festive occasions and entertaining guests, typically served with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, vinegar and chilli powder (choganjang).
Yachae-twigim
야채튀김
Korean-style vegetable fritters made with thinly sliced seasonal vegetables such as sweet potato, kabocha squash, onion and perilla leaves, coated in batter and deep-fried. A beloved staple at Korean snack bars and as a home-cooked side dish, classically enjoyed alongside Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes).
Kimchi-jeon
김치전
Korean Kimchi savory pancake made by mixing finely chopped well-ripened Kimchi into the frying mix batter and pan-frying until golden. Pairing Kimchi-jeon with Makgeolli (Korean traditional rice wine) on a rainy day is a long-standing Korean food tradition. The crispy edges and chewy center are its signature appeal.
Haemul-pajeon
해물파전
Korean seafood and green onion pancake made by layering generous amounts of green onions with squid, shrimp and mussels, then pouring batter over and pan-frying. A signature dish of the southern regions including Busan, and a beloved sharing dish enjoyed among friends and family in Korea.
Gochu-twigim
고추튀김
A popular Korean street food snack where peppers are stuffed with minced meat or Japchae (glass noodle) filling, or simply coated in batter and deep-fried. Dipping them in Tteokbokki sauce doubles the spicy, crispy flavour. One of the most iconic snacks in Korean street food culture.
Gamja-jeon
감자전
A Korean potato pancake famous as a regional specialty of Gangwon Province. Finely grated potato is mixed with a small amount of frying mix to add chewiness to the batter, then pan-fried until golden. Served with a soy-based dipping sauce, the natural sweetness of potato and the crispy edges complement each other perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Sempio Crispy Frying Mix and how is it different from regular flour?

Sempio Crispy Frying Mix is a dedicated frying batter mix combining wheat flour, corn starch, baking powder, salt and white pepper in an optimised ratio. Using plain flour alone tends to produce a thick, heavy coating, whereas this product — thanks to the corn starch and baking powder — creates a light, crispy batter with just the addition of water. Tempura-style batter mixes originate from Japanese cuisine and are widely used in both Korean and Japanese households for frying vegetables, seafood, meat and more. The greatest advantage is that you can achieve a perfectly crispy result without measuring out separate ingredients.

Is this product suitable for vegans or vegetarians?

Yes, Sempio Crispy Frying Mix is suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. It contains no animal-derived ingredients, and pairs excellently with a wide range of plant-based ingredients such as vegetables, mushrooms and tofu to create great vegan fried dishes. Please note, however, that wheat flour is the primary ingredient (90%), so this product is not suitable for a gluten-free diet. Additionally, halal certification has not been obtained for this product, so those strictly following a halal diet should take note.

I have allergies — is this product safe for me? What allergens does it contain?

This product contains gluten, one of the EU's 14 mandatory declared allergens. As the primary ingredient is wheat flour (90%), persons with a wheat allergy or coeliac disease must avoid consumption. The product also contains the flavour enhancer E621 (monosodium glutamate, MSG). While E621 is not among the EU's mandatory allergen declarations, those sensitive to MSG should be aware. MSG is a naturally occurring umami compound also found in kombu seaweed, tomatoes and Parmesan cheese, and serves to enhance flavour in food products.

What dishes can I make with this frying mix? Is it easy to use at home in Europe?

Sempio Crispy Frying Mix can be used with a wide variety of ingredients including vegetable fritters, mushroom fritters, shrimp fritters, squid fritters and tofu fritters. It works perfectly with ingredients readily available at European supermarkets such as onion, carrot, courgette, bell pepper, broccoli and shiitake mushrooms. The method is also very straightforward: mix the frying mix with cold water (ice water recommended) to make a batter, dip your ingredients, and deep-fry at 170–180°C. The key tip is to mix lightly — over-mixing develops gluten and reduces crispiness.

How should I store this product? Can I use it over a longer period after opening?

Before opening, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. After opening, moisture can cause the baking powder to react and lose its leavening power, so it is recommended to transfer the mix to an airtight container or resealable bag. Use as soon as possible after opening, and if any lumps have formed during storage, sift the mix before use. Always check the best-before date printed on the packaging.
