This product is the official dipping sauce from HAIDILAO, a hot pot specialist brand hugely popular across China and beyond. "Hot pot" (Huoguo) is a traditional Asian communal cooking style where meat, vegetables, tofu and more are cooked directly in a boiling broth at the table — similar in concept to European fondue or raclette. This sauce is used as a dipping sauce for the cooked ingredients, featuring a rich, nutty and spicy flavour profile from sesame paste, peanuts, chive flower sauce and naturally fermented bean curd. Beyond hot pot, it can also be used as a sauce for grilled tofu, vegetable sticks or stir-fried dishes.
Based on the EU export label, this product is made from 100% plant-based ingredients and is suitable for both Vegans and Vegetarians. However, one important note: some versions of this product sold in non-EU markets (such as the US or China domestic market) under the same name have been reported to contain oyster ingredients. The product sold by dotAsia is the EU export specification and uses only plant-based ingredients. Nevertheless, if you follow a strict vegan diet, we recommend checking the ingredient list on the physical product label before purchase.
This product (EU export version) contains the following 4 EU mandatory allergens: Peanuts, Soybeans, Mustard, Sesame. Additionally, depending on the manufacturing environment, trace amounts of peanuts, tree nuts, fish, crustaceans, milk and eggs may be present due to cross-contamination. Regarding gluten (wheat) allergy: wheat and gluten are not declared on the EU label, however some market versions have been reported to contain wheat — if you have a wheat allergy, please always check the physical product label. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed above, please avoid consumption.
This product is rated "Spicy", featuring chili oil layered over a creamy, nutty base of sesame paste and peanuts. While the heat level is on the stronger side, the rich nutty base helps temper the intensity, making it quite different from a sauce that is simply hot. If you are not accustomed to spicy food, start with a small amount and adjust to taste. Please also note that this sauce has a high sodium content (approximately 5.4g of salt per 100g, around 270% of the EU daily recommended intake), so using it in small quantities as a dipping sauce is the most appropriate way to enjoy it.
This sauce contains naturally fermented bean curd as one of its key ingredients. Fermented bean curd is made by traditionally ageing and fermenting tofu, using a process similar in principle to how cheese or wine develops deep complexity through maturation. This fermented ingredient contributes a complex, layered umami depth to the overall sauce. Note that this product itself is not classified as a "fermented sauce" — it is a compound seasoning sauce that includes fermented bean curd as one of its components.
